Leather Care

All of our masks are handmade from leather. They are individually crafted and painted. It is important to know how to care for your mask to prolong the life and health of your mask.

If you do not have much direct experience with leather masks, here are a few pointers to keeping your mask in good condition. Your mask is made from leather through a process of hand carving and then molding water-treated leather. All masks are painted with special paint designed for use with leather to reduce cracking due to movement; however, excessive movement, especially at extreme temperatures, can still crack the paint on your mask. Each mask is then treated with a protective coating that will help keep your mask nice, clean, and protected. The coating can only do so much to protect your mask; the rest is up to you:

Do not wash your mask or get it wet, that includes keeping it out of the rain and away from excessive sweat. Humidity is not likely to damage your mask, but we recommend keeping it out of fog or prolonged exposure to very high humidity. Your mask has been hand painted, so treat it like you might treat an expensive pair of sunglasses. Place it face up when you set it down and try not to scratch the surface. Don't flatten your mask. Since it is made of leather your mask is quite flexible, but if you bend it too much it may crack. If you bend it often or for a long period of time, it may warp. When you aren't using your mask, mount it on a wall for display (this will actually help keep the shape of your mask too). Tie the cords together and slip it over two nails (or anything strong enough to hold it). The distance between the nails should be almost the distance between the holes for the ties. If you can't hang it, at least pack it mindfully into a box with something to support it underneath (We find that a small rolled up towel and tissue paper works well for prolonged storage to keep the shape of the mask while still protecting the edges).
